Understanding Urgent Dental Issues

We address common emergencies and take the necessary steps to handle them effectively.

Severe Toothache

A persistent or throbbing toothache that doesn’t go away is often a sign of infection or decay deep within the tooth. This kind of pain can escalate quickly and may require root canal therapy or other treatment to prevent the spread of infection. If your pain keeps you from sleeping, eating, or focusing, it’s time to get immediate help.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Whether from an accident, bite mishap, or weakened enamel, a cracked or chipped tooth isn’t just a cosmetic concern; it can expose the sensitive inner layers of the tooth and lead to further damage or infection. Depending on the severity, we may repair it with bonding, a crown, or other restorative treatment to protect your smile.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is one of the most urgent dental emergencies. If handled within the first 30 minutes, there’s a chance the tooth can be saved and reimplanted. Always pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it, and bring it to the office in milk or saliva if possible. The faster you act, the better the outcome.

Swollen or Bleeding Gums

Sudden swelling, bleeding, or pus around the gums can indicate a serious infection such as an abscess. Left untreated, gum infections can affect the surrounding teeth and even impact your overall health. If your gums are painful, warm to the touch, or appear inflamed, it’s important to be seen as soon as possible.

What To Do In A Dental Emergency

Our extraordinary team of dentists will rid you of your toothache or pain as quickly as possible, but in the meantime try these tips.

When chipped or fractured teeth, toothaches, missing fillings and crowns, and loose and fallen teeth happen, it’s important not to panic. Even if you might not be able to immediately make it to our office for an emergency appointment, there are still things you can do to help you manage while you wait:

Milk Bath. If you have a tooth knocked out or broken, submerge the tooth or broken fragment in milk (or saltwater). This clears the tooth of any dirt or bacteria, but be sure not to scrub your tooth clean. Once clean, you should return your tooth to its socket and see an emergency dentist immediately.

Salt Water Rinse. If you have cut or damaged your lips, tongue, or gums, rinse with saltwater and put gauze on the affected area. This clears away bacteria and any food particles that may have gotten stuck.

Denture Glue. If a crown or filling falls out, make an appointment right away. In the meantime, you can use denture glue to temporarily secure it in place and reduce the risk of bacteria and infection. Your tooth may also be sensitive to temperature, pressure, and air, so covering up the exposed tooth can help reduce sensitivity.

Pain Medication. Dental emergencies can be painful, but over-the-counter medications can help take off the edge and make the discomfort manageable until you can visit our office. If you also experience swelling, an ice pack held over the place of the toothache can reduce the swelling and relieve your pain.

Dental Emergencies Can Be Overwhelming But You’re Not Alone

Timely care, clear information, and a calm approach matter most for your comfort and health.

When a dental emergency strikes, it often brings more than just pain; it comes with anxiety, uncertainty, and a need for clear answers. Understanding what’s happening in your mouth and why it matters can ease some of that stress. Whether it’s an unexpected injury or a hidden issue that suddenly worsens, dental emergencies can affect everything from your ability to eat to how you speak and sleep.

At their core, emergencies reveal the importance of timely care and awareness. Conditions like cracked teeth, infections, or lost restorations may start small but can rapidly progress when left unaddressed. Knowing the signs and acting early, when possible, can make all the difference in both comfort and outcomes.

Even in urgent moments, thoughtful care matters. A calm, informed approach helps ensure that treatment goes beyond symptom relief, supporting your long-term oral health without unnecessary complications.

Tooth Replacement Options

Our dentists help you restore your smile to its former beauty after a tooth extraction with replacement options.

When you have a tooth removed, it’s crucial to quickly find a working permanent replacement to keep your smile as healthy and beautiful as possible. Replacement teeth don’t just restore your smile. They retain it, too. A tooth extraction left alone can lead to bone deterioration, shifting of neighboring teeth, and further decay and infection.

At Complete Health Dentistry, we offer a variety of restoration options that look natural and perfect for your smile.

Dental Implant. A dental implant is a surgical operation that attaches and fuses an artificial tooth to your jawbone, functioning exactly like a real tooth would. A bone graft may be needed beforehand to ensure there is enough bone to fully support the dental prosthetic. Implants are the easiest replacement option to clean and maintain as you treat it like you would your natural teeth. Implants can also be used as supports for bridges and crowns to better stabilize your bite.

Fixed Dental Bridge. As its name suggests, a dental bridge bridges the gap made by a missing tooth. The two neighboring teeth are each shaved down and fitted with a crown, with an artificial tooth attached between them. Bridges are a great option if you need more than one tooth replaced in the same area, with up to 4 extractions possible to retain stability. This option takes more work to upkeep and clean than implants, but they’re also more cost-efficient.

Removable Dentures. Dentures are a perfect option for any and all needed extraction replacements. A partial denture can replace 1 or more missing teeth in a single area, while a complete denture can fully replace a full set of teeth. With a pink-colored base and resin or porcelain teeth, dentures blend in naturally and fit perfectly to your mouth to give you a perfect smile. Their removable nature means that they’re not quite as stable as other fixed options, but adding an implant support can easily fix this.
